Welcome to this Maundy Thursday celebration. On this night we remember and celebrate the final supper Jesus shared with his disciples in the context of the Passover, when the people of Israel observed their liberation from Egypt. Hear this instruction that God gave to the people of Israel:. The Footwashing. The simplest tradition is for the pastor to wash the feet of a few leaders in the congregation, either elders or representatives from different ages or groups.
They remove their shoes and sit in a place visible to all. The pastor kneels, pours water from a pitcher into a basin, and then wipes their feet with a towel.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, Creator of the Universe. Through your work, all things were made, and by your goodness we have this food to share. Blessed be God forever. You alone know how often we have grieved you by wasting your gifts, by wandering from your ways, by forgetting your love.
Forgive us, we pray you, most merciful Father, and free us from our sin. Reader 1: God may be speaking to us individually, asking whether we have fully and freely accepted his offer of freedom at the Festival of Redemption. Have we, for example, sprinkled the Blood of the Lamb on the doorposts of our hearts in the face of human and spiritual opposition, clearly trusting in God to deliver us? Reader 1: We are bound to thank, praise, glorify, extol and adore God who did all these wonders for our ancestors and for us.
God brought us forth. Simons Island, Georgia. Our worship follows a pattern of revelation and response: we learn of God and his message to us, and we respond through worship and discipleship.
In this way, worship is a two-part dialogue with God. Often, the voluntary is based on the opening hymn, and helps increase our familiarity with the selected hymn as it sets the tone for worship to follow. Quiet meditation is encouraged during the voluntary.
Announcements that are important to the community are shared. God calls us to sing his praises! The opening hymn focuses on God, proclaiming his attributes, and the praise God deserves. Primarily, the opening prayer asks God to be with us in our worship.
It frequently focuses us on the season or liturgical church calendar observance of the day.Spiritual Direction: How to open a service with scripture
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Beyond just setting the scene for the sermon, the Scriptures offer the opportunity for God, through the Holy Spirit, to speak to us in real and meaningful ways. The Psalms are also frequently used as an opening act of praise in worship.
The Psalms contain the entire breadth of human experience including praise, songs of thanksgiving, prayers of lament, wisdom psalms, and royal psalms. This remarkable collection of poetry, prayer, and praise reflects a broad range of religious faith, liturgical life, and historical experience for the people of Israel. The letters in the New Testament from Apostles to Christians are usually referred to as epistles. Those traditionally attributed to Paul are known as Pauline epistles and the others as catholic i.
A Gospel is an account describing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the synoptic Gospels; many similarities exist between them that are not shared by the Gospel of John. It is traditional to stand for the reading of the Gospel lesson in order to show reverence for these stories of the life of Jesus.
HYMN The middle hymn in the service connects to themes expressed in the Scripture readings and prepares us for the theme that the sermon will express later in the service. The middle hymn is placed in service in order to best connect to the message it is intended to convey, so it may not always occur in the same order each week. In the intercessory prayer, we address God in a special way, as priestly intercessors for each other and for the world at large. One Sunday I Steve served as visiting preacher at a church that had planned a mission emphasis service.
The music carried the energy of the large and growing majority-world Christian movement. A little later in the service, a PowerPoint presentation projected scenes of Christians from around the world gathering to worship the crucified, risen, and reigning Christ. One slide depicted Africans in colorful dress clapping and dancing to the music of drums and shakers. Another showed a house church in China singing a cappella. Various church members explained the work of each missionary they supported and provided an update or prayer request.
It was clear from the warm response that these missionaries were truly known and loved by many in the congregation. Every element of the service focused on the mission task of the church.
The result was a coherent act of worship to the God who calls the church to participate in the kingdom mission. What made this one stand out? Several things. They had assembled a variety of people, information, and visual and auditory elements into a coherent whole.
And they prayed. As part of their preparation, they called on the council, prayer teams, and the congregation to ask the Lord of the harvest to stir up the people and fill them with a passion to see lives and communities transformed worldwide.
For years, mission emphasis events and worship services have been a staple in North American churches. In many cases, both worship services on two successive Sundays highlighted domestic and foreign missions, Word and deed, personal and radio ministries. Congregations would host a midweek potluck supper to allow missionaries opportunities to report on their work. Some suggest that mission emphasis events detract from a year-round integration of outreach ministries into the life of the congregation.
The fact that a married couple celebrates their anniversary once a year does not detract from their ongoing appreciation of one another. On the contrary, such a special event enhances the everyday living out of their commitment to love and care for one another.
Similarly, mission emphasis worship services and events can result in a congregation that is better informed and more inspired for mission involvement throughout the year. Instead of dropping a bill or two into the collection plate when the offering is received for missions, a faith promise calls on each member of the congregation to prayerfully consider what God would have them give to the cause of missions through the local church and then to fulfill that commitment throughout the year see sidebar.
Planning a successful mission emphasis event can be exciting and meaningful. Here are some guidelines you may find helpful:. Involve people of different ages.Do you know how to look beyond the style of a "traditional" or "contemporary" worship service to find its worship vision, structure, and theology?
Ron Rienstra says it's a question more worship planners should ask and answer. A feature story exploring the planning for Contemporary Worship services.
Planning Contemporary Worship Services
Picture two coffeehouses. In each, espresso scents the air. Images flicker across screens. String bass, keyboard, and saxophone twine a slow rhythm that makes your shoulders relax.
You forget your must-do list and let poetry, Scripture, and music soothe you. As Sisco and other contemporary worship leaders explain, worship is more than music. It has a structure. And the ways we worship form how we live out our Christian faith.
She describes Wicker Park Grace as part of the emerging church movement. The typical vespers turnout is small enough that people can sit in a circle, volunteer to read from their seats, and take time to talk about the readings. Kladder, now a Princeton seminarian, recently completed a church internship. Hearing others pray their prayers on your behalf reinforces the understanding of worship as diverse people united in the work of conversing with God.
Good worship—whether labeled contemporary, traditional, or blended—has a structure. It uses many liturgical forms, all intentional. With five services and 10, people, New Hope needs to include all worship elements without going overtime—else traffic gridlock results. With so many involved in planning and leading worship, a clear structure helps all teams keep the service flowing toward the same goal. In this pattern we find the freedom to express our relationship with God in authentic, relevant ways.
The age-old worship pattern of prayers of the people, followed by offering and communion, teaches us how to live. If we pray for the homeless, our offering might be volunteering at a homeless shelter once a week during our lunch break. Listen to his music. In other words, a thoughtful pattern for worship keeps worship as worship. It protects worship from degenerating into a performance, into entertainment, or into an educational lecture.

By: Joan Huyser-Honig.Why do we come together as a community of believers on Sunday mornings? What elements are important and meaningful to all who gather? These are powerful questions for anyone that takes part in worship planning to ask, and answer.
If you haven't already, take a few minutes to write out your answers. Here are a few more questions you might ask:. What will teach them about God's Word and lead them in prayer and praise?
What will engage them and draw them closer to God? I think we often try to put too many things in the service, especially at this time of the year, and it ends up feeling cluttered and crowded and scattered.
Want to plan a cohesive service? Here are a few helpful words of advice:. Then select or create elements of worship the how that are most appropriate to that particular purpose.
As I noted in my post a few weeks ago read it herein case you missed itthe "basic pattern" or Service of Word and Table has five main parts:. There are lots of things you can do with these components and many creative ways to structure worship in a way that is meaningful and engaging for your congregation. John Witvliet noted that a good worship order template includes a variety of worship actions praise, confession, dedication, prayer, scripture, etc.
To help get you started and hopefully, give you a few ideas for worship planning, here are five creative worship order templates:. This communion service is based on the "basic pattern" outlined above, with expanded sections for praise and confession, thanksgiving, a spoken creed, and a call to service at the end.
Another communion service, this one is much simpler. The "Lord's Prayer" is sung by the congregation following communion, in place of the closing hymn. Similar to no. I love the simplicity of this worship order.
Note that the choir sings at the beginning of the service and again during the offertory. I also love the sung congregational response at the end. This service is divided into sections that mirror the "basic pattern" but use more modern language to tell the story of why we gather for worship: to hear the Word, to renew commitment, and to disperse in mission. This worship order includes many more traditional elements, including an affirmation of faith or creed and the Gloria Patri.

November 16, Worship. What is the purpose of worship? Here are a few more questions you might ask: What does your church value? Free Printable Looking for a printable version of these worship order templates?Enter Email Address. In this post, I want to post an example of an order of service that I put together last semester for a class. This is just one example of how to perform the elements of worship. I tried to order the service in a way that is God-focused, Scripture-saturated, and limited to the elements of worship revealed in Scripture.
I also tried to order the service in a way that flows well, stays vertically focused, and communicates a grand vision of God. Pastors are responsible for overseeing worship. A pastor is shirking his duty if worship services are planned in a slapdash manner. Also, this order of service is highly influenced by my own experience of worship at the church I attend. The brothers and sisters there have provided a great example of God-centered and gospel-saturated worship.
I have been shaped by worship there in an indelible way. Transition: Let us bind our hearts together in one voice and consider the greatness of the God whom we worship this morning. Let us reverently sing and meditate on these warnings from Psalm Titus Transition: Thanks be to God for His mercy. Let us rise and sing praises to Him. Let us declare His lovingkindness and the greatness of His works among us.
Transition Statement: We have a new believer who is joining the body of Christ this morning through baptism. We have read the promises of the gospel this morning; let us now prepare to see the Word of God in the symbol of baptism. Let us sing together hymn Baptism is to be administered to all those who actually profess repentance towards God, faith in and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ, and to none other. It is the duty of such who are rightly baptized to give up themselves to some particular and orderly church of Jesus Christ, that they may walk in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent, According to your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Pastor: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! New Testament Reading Hebrews We use wine as the element commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ. We provide grape juice in the outer ring for those who conscientiously abstain from wine. Heavenly Father, we offer you eternal praise and thanks that you have granted so great a benefit to us poor sinners, having drawn us into the Communion of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, whom you have delivered to death for us, and whom you have given us as the meat and drink of eternal life.
Now grant us this other benefit: that you will never allow us to forget these things; but having them imprinted on our hearts, may we grow and increase daily in the faith which is at work in every good deed. Thus may we order and pursue all our life to the exaltation of your glory and the edification of our neighbor, through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, who in the unity of the Holy Spirit lives and reigns with you, O God, forever.
